Coach question · updated 15 October 2026

Is there an app that keeps percentage-based programming and delivers it to athletes?

Yes. In Strength Academy you write the program the way you do in your spreadsheet, as sets, reps and a percentage of 1RM, and each athlete sees their own weight in kilograms in the app, worked out from their max. You can link any exercise to the max it should use, such as power snatch off the snatch, and when an athlete logs a heavier single, their 1RM and next week’s weights follow.

The phone exercise editor: push press plus push jerk, 5 sets of 2+2 at 64.5% of 1RM, with the line “≈ 61.5 kg from Emma’s 1RM of 95 kg” and load options kg, kg range, % of 1RM and % range
The coach writes 64.5%. The editor shows what that is in kilos for this athlete.

How it works

  1. Write it like a spreadsheet cell

Type a line such as “back squat 5x3 @ 80%” into a day and it becomes an exercise with sets, reps and a percentage. You can also prescribe kilos, a kilo range, a percentage range or an RPE target, and give one lift several rows for a top set and back-off sets.

  2. Link each lift to the right max

Every exercise has a “Link to 1RM” setting. Pick the lift’s own max or another one, for example power snatch off the snatch, and star it to make it your default next time. Variations picked from the powerlifting exercise list link to their competition lift on their own.

  3. Athletes see kilos, not maths

On the athlete’s phone the exercise shows the weight in kilograms and every set is filled in with it. When they look ahead at a day they see both, such as “75% (90 kg)”. If a new percentage program needs a 1RM the athlete has not entered, the app asks them for it, and until then they see the percentage and an empty box. Nothing is guessed.

  4. Maxes move when they lift more

A heavier single logged in training updates the 1RM the percentages come from, and a heavier double, triple or set of five updates that rep max. Missed lifts never move a max.

Other apps that do this

TrainHeroic, TeamBuildr and BridgeAthletic also turn a percentage into each athlete’s weight and let you base a lift on another lift’s max. TeamBuildr and BridgeAthletic are built mostly for teams and schools.

Trainerize does not calculate weights from a percentage yet: a request for it on its ideas board has been open since 2016 with more than 400 votes. That is why many coaches on general training apps still keep their percentages in a spreadsheet.

Limits worth knowing

  • Without a link, only a few weightlifting lifts and the back and front squat find their max by name. Set the link once on everything else, and star it to reuse it.
  • The athlete’s screen rounds to the nearest whole kilogram. There is no rounding to the plates in the gym yet.
  • Strength loads are in kilograms. Pounds are only available in the CrossFit workout builder for now.
